DIRECTORS’ FORTNIGHT ANNOUNCES SELECTION WITH NINE DEBUT FILMS
According to the same text, “the 23 chosen films, among which many first features, deal with the violence, paradoxical beauty and complexity of our times”. CONTROL, by debut Dutch filmmaker Anton Corbijn, will open the fortnight. The filmmaker comes from a wide experience in the production of video clips for U2,
Depeche Mode, New Order, Nirvana, Coldplay and Red Hot Chili Peppers, among others. CONTROL tells the life and death of Ian Curtis, lead singer of the legendary post-punk rock band Joy Division. The musician committed suicide on the eve of the band’s first U.S.A. tour, in May 1980.Since its creation, the Directors’ Fortnight has discovered names that are celebrated nowadays, such as Werner Herzog, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Nagisa Oshima, George Lucas, Martin Scorsese, Jim Jarmush, Michael Haneke, Spike Lee, the Dardenne brothers, Sofia Coppola, besides having honor guests as Robert Bresson, Manoel de Oliveira and Stephen Frears.
