The List of Films Most Voted-for by the Public is Now Available

The work has just begun for the jury, who will now have to watch the fourteen films that were most voted-for by the public in order to select the winner of the Jury’s Bandeira Paulista Award.

The coordinating committee at 30th Mostra (São Paulo International Film Festival) released on Saturday, the 28th, the list of competing films that received most of the votes from the public. These films will be evaluated by the international jury and they are competing for the Jury’s Bandeira Paulista Award. The award will be given at the closing ceremony on Thursday, November 2nd, at the Ibirapuera Auditorium. The films that received most of the votes were:

- Drained, Brazil, by Heitor Dhalia

- Go Etxebeste!, Spain, by Asier Altuna and Telmo Esnal

- How Much Further, Ecuador, by Tania Hermida

- Mother of Mine, Finland, by Klaus Härö

- The Violin, Mexico, by Francisco Vargas

- The Yacoubian Building, Egypt, by Marwan Hamed

- The Year My Parents Went on Vacation, Brazil, by Cao Hamburger

- Things Behind the Sun, Israel, by Yuval Shafferman

The jury at the 30th Mostra consists of: Iraqi director, screenwriter and actor Bahman Gohbadi; Italian psychoanalyst and essayist now living in Brazil, Contardo Calligaris; Brazilian actress and director now living in Italy, Florinda Bolkan; Mexican producer Jorge Sánchez; Spanish producer, curator and photographer José Maria Prado; American-born Brazilian photography director Lauro Escorel; and German director and screenwriter Wolfgang Becker.

The public is still voting for their favorite films so that at the end of the 30th Mostra the Public Bandeira Paulista Award can be computed. There are 97 foreign films and 23 Brazilian films being presented by new directors. Leon Cakoff, Mostra’s director, pointed out the total liberty given to the jury to choose the winner. He also highlighted that, although he is sorry not to see certain films in the public’s list, he considers this to be the best way to decide. Since the public will be voting up to the end of Mostra, it is possible that other acclaimed films may arise, clarified Cakoff. Renata de Almeida, producer and director of Mostra`s schedule, said that she is always upset when the list comes out, because "any choice means a loss". But, she considers this year`s selection to be representative of the Mostra due to the diversity of countries from where the indicated films come.
