SILENT MOVIE ON SCREEN, LIVE MUSIC AT CINESESC

This year the movie Cabiria will be screened, one of the greatest Italian silent classics by Giovanni Pastrone. The 1914 production, considered by Fellini as one of his great inspirations, was restored and is set during the Punic Wars in Carthage (300 AC). The film was named after the main character Cabiria, who is about to be sacrificed to god Moloch, but is saved by a Roman soldier and his servant. The film was restored by Turin’s Museo Nazionale del Cinema, in association with PresTech Film Laboratories Ltd., company owned by João Sócrates, a Brazilian living in London. The music will be performed by Italian pianist Stefano Maccagno.

For the fans of William Shakespeare, it is worth seeing Silent Shakespeare, a compilation of seven silent short movies based on the works of the British writer and produced by cinema pioneers between 1899-1911 in the USA, Italy and England. The music will be performed by British pianist Laura Rossi, British guitarist Mike Outram and by Portinari Quartet of OSESP (São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra). The quartet is formed by Matthew Thorpe and Simona Cavuoto, violins; Peter Pas, viola; and Marialbi Trisolio, violoncello.

Also the horror enthusiasts will have the opportunity to watch Scary Stories, by Richard Oswald. Released in Germany in 1919, it was the first horror movie of the German cinema’s movement. Recently restored by the Goethe Institute, the groundbreaking production comprises five one-act plays, which are based on short stories by Edgar Allan Poe and Robert Louis Stevenson, among other writers. The music will be performed by pianist Paulo Braga, teacher at the Department of Popular Music of Tom Jobim Musical Studies Center.
