Short love stories for a great film
Section `Un Certain Regard`, the opening film... Opinions are unanimous concerning "Paris, je t`Aime", a film in episodes on the districts of Paris. The film is pleasing, moving, even if there is no balance or coherence between one directing and another. The French spirit, sometimes somewhat mean, little disposed towards strangers, is referred to humorously. Love for the city prevails throughout.
The directors invited to direct the episodes were the following: Alfonso Cuarón (Mexico), Gurinder Chadha (India), Gus Van Sant (USA), Isabelle Coixet (Spain), Joel and Ethan Coen (USA), Nobuhiro Suwa (Japan), Alexander Payne (USA), Oliver Schmitz (South Africa), Richard LaGravenese (USA), Tom Tykwer (Germany), Vincenzo Natali (Italy), Walter Salles and Daniela Thomas (Brazil), Wes Craven (USA), and French directors Olivier Assayas, Frédéric Auburtin, Sylvain Chomet, Gérard Depardieu, and Bruno Podalydès.
The best are Alfonso Cuarón (parent-child relationship), Isabelle Coixet (a man decides to leave his wife when he discovers she is seriously ill), Joel and Ethan Coen (a U.S. tourist faces hostility from a French couple in the subway), Oliver Schmitz (a road sweeper is at death`s door in the street when an old flame comes to his aid), Tom Tykwer (a blind boy falls in love with an actress), Walter Salles and Daniela Thomas (a Latin-American immigrant must tear herself away from her own baby in the suburbs to take care of another born with the proverbial silver spoon in its mouth), and Alexander Payne (a U.S. tourist who speaks French discovers Paris and her self-esteem), bringing the film to a close.
The production took six years to be finished and ended in a court case between
two parties involved. The good reception awarded to the film at the 56th Cannes
Film Festival optimized international distribution and "Paris, je t`Aime"
is expected to be released on the main film markets worldwide.
