Sérgio Machado wishes to bring people closer together, through cinema.
Sérgio Machado's first film as director was a documentary At the Edge of the Earth (2001, shown at the 25th Mostra), now followed by a fiction film, a drama, Lower City. The film focuses on a love threesome played by Lázaro Ramos, Wagner Moura, and Alice Braga and will be shown once more next Wednesday (November 2), at 4:00 P.M. at Cine Bombril 1.Assistant director and cast director for films such as Central Station, The First Day, and Behind the Sun, Machado says he makes films "to say things that are essential about the world". Both the director and script writer would like their films to help to draw human beings closer to each other. "When you see people close to and can break down the barrier of prejudice, what is most striking is the similarity between them. Everyone is good and evil, everyone desires, and envies", he says.
Even though he has made films that are extremely different one from the other, the film maker believes there is a thread that can be traced through his films: "My films throb with life, and life is sometimes hard. Even so, it is worthwhile to step on it and carry on living".
Machado sees two opposing movements in the future of cinema: "On one hand, you can be optimistic because of technology that makes production less costly, and this will surely increase the number of independent films. On the other hand, Hollywood spends more and more on million-dollar productions and becomes ever less inventive. My impression is that this abyss will tend, increasingly, to grow."
In spite of this, the film maker emphasizes that, in his view, interesting films will continue to be made. "I view internet with a great deal of optimism - a possibility to divulge ideas."
