Discussion about politic cinema mentions production difficulties

The discussion “Cinema and Politic Reality” at Clube da Mostra (Conjunto Nacional – Cine Bombril Hall, 2073, Paulista Avenue) gathered this Monday (24) the actor and director Paulo Betti (who has debut as director with the feature filme Cafundó), the director José Joffily (who will have his films exhibited at the 29th Film Festival Lost and Found and Lust For Power) and the executive producer Eduardo Albergaria (of the film I am Cuba, The Siberian Mammoth). The mediator was the critic and journalist Rubens Edwald Filho.

Betti and Jofflily complained about the difficulties in collecting resources for films productions in Brazil. Betti is worried about the end of the incitement law, which is valid until 2006.

Albergaria added “it’s still difficult to have the interest of the sponsorship companies in documentaries”, despite of the fact that there’s an increasing acceptance of the genre, even internationally. The producer gave as an example his own film I am Cuba, The Siberian Mammoth, which was released five copies in the USA and shall be released with the same number of copies in Spain.

The director Joffily also showed his taste for documentaries (category of one of his films in the 29th Film Festival, Lust For Power, co-directed by Eduardo Escorel): When I finish a documentary, I know more about the world, because I heard more than I listened”. The three agreed that the classification “politic cinema” is becoming more enclosed, capable of including different films such as Cafundó (fictionalized cine biography about a religious black leader from Sorocaba), I am Cuba, The Siberian Mammoth (documentary which describes the accidental trajectory of Soy Cuba, co-production Cuban-Soviet shot during the Cold War, in 1964) and the documentary Lust For Power (that follows the politic campaigns of some politicians in Rio de Janeiro)

The producer Albergaria pointed out that his next project is a new documentary that deals strictly with politic. “Few people know, but today Brazil is a great exporter of political marketing. The Brazilian marketers are helping to elect presidents all over Latin America”, he said about the theme of his new film, Por Trás do Marketing Político.
