In Two Short Films Of The Film Festival, The Invisibility According To Abbas Kiarostami And Manoel De Oliveira

The São Paulo International Film Festival presents in its 29th edition, two short films that are part of its new feature film project Os Invisíveis. They are: O Mestre Invisível by Evaldo Mocarzel and Leon Cakoff, dedicated to the Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami; and Do Visível ao Invisível by the Portuguese master Manoel de Oliveira.

O Mestre Invisível uses fragments of the workshop ministered by Abbas Kiarostmi to cinema students, on October 2004, at FAAP, as activities parts of the 28th BR Film Festival, where he reveals that his greatest satisfaction as filmmaker is to become imperceptible on the eyes of the public. The same ideas can be extracted from the book “Abbas Kiarostami”. released last year by the Film Festival in association with Cosac Naify, with fragments also quoted in the short film O Mestre Invisível.

The short film Do Visível ao Invisível, by Manoel de Oliveira, started during the Film Festival 2004, when the filmmaker wrote the screenplay and shot it with a hidden camera at Paulista Avenue, where two friends meet again, one of them a Portuguese and the other a Brazilian, and they can’t keep a conversation due to the sequent calls on their cell phones. The dialogue between the two friends on happens when one of them decides to make a phone call to the other face to face. The project Os Invisíveis product of an idea of the TV showman Sérgio Groisman, has as invited directors, the Canadian Guy Maddin, who presents in the 29th Film Festival his extraordinary short film My Father Is a Hundred Years Old, in association with Isabella Rossellini; the Polish Jerzy Stuhr, director who started as an actor of Krzysztof Kieslowski, the Argentinean Fernando Solanas, who presents A Dignidade dos Ninguéns in this year’s Film Festival. The project of the feature film Os Invisíveis, just like the prior production of the São Paulo International Film Festival Welcome to São Paulo, will have more segments with the participation of new filmmakers.

During his workshop at FAAP on October 25th, for an audience of students, after the exhibition of his film Magic Mirror, the master Manoel de Oliveira, agreed with Abbas Kiarostami about his philosophic thoughts about the cinema. “It makes me happy to think the public forget about the director’s existence when watching my film”. As for Abbas Kiarostami and Manoel de Oliveira, two incontestable masters of the motion picture, the idea of the invisibility enhances the importance of an art that stimulates through the deprivation. A cinema purified by the doctrine of Saint Francisco de Assis.
