Big presence of the public in the Clube Mostra discussions
The first day of discussions at the Clube da Mostra (Conjunto Nacional – Cine Bombril Hall, 2073, Paulista Avenue), Saturday (22nd), filled up the place, with a huge participation of the public. The first discussion was “Musical Vanguard and New Languages”, on the films Gilberto Mendes, uma Odisséia Musical, by Carlos Mendes, and Musicagen, by Edu Felistoque and Nereu Cerdeira – coordinated by the critic Rubens Edwald Filho, with the presences of the musicians André Abujamra (creator of the 29th Film Festival vignette and the soundtrack Musicagen), Arrigo Barnabé, and the experts Lutero Rodrigues e Rodolfo Coelho de Souza.Presenting the film that restores his father’s image, Gilberto Mendes – vanguard composer, worldwide famous, but not rightly recognized in Brazil – the director Carlos Mendes pointed out “the need to question what’s vanguard nowadays. After all, the shock today doesn’t shock anymore”. Gilberto Mendes explained that he doesn’t consider himself a pioneer, as normally he’s labeled by the critics and commentators. “I’m just a composer”, he guaranteed. An observation commented by the musician and great admirer of Gilberto Mendes, Arrigo Barnabé: “There was a whole musician generation that tried new things but, somehow gave up. Gilberto Mendes never gave it up”. In the same stile, Abujamra said he never considered himself “modern or pioneer”. I play the music that comes from my heart”, he explained.
Fernando Sardo, luthiê (a person who makes instruments) and a character in the film Musicagem pointed out that for him “it’s clear that the vanguard exists”. And said: “Through culture you can be a liberator, allowing other people to express their concept of the world. The vanguard is alive through passionate people who love what they do”. A declaration applauded by the enthusiastic public who attended the discussion. The expert Rodolfo Coelho de Souza, commented Gilberto Mendes’s “cultural rouser” role, and compared the Film Festival to the New Music Festival, because both events “fulfill their role without being faithful to the market expectations”.
Chile in question - The second discussion on Saturday discussed the theme “Chile’s Battle – 30 Years After”, focusing the famous documentary in three parts, The Battle of Chile, by Patrício Guzmán, which will be exhibited again in the Festival programming, on next Tuesday (25th), 1:00 pm, at Cineclube Vitrine 3.
The jounalists Maria do Rosário Caetano, Fabiano Maisonnave (Folha) and Pablo Villaça (site Cinema em Cena) commented the motion picture today and its democratic leftwing vision, contemplating all the sides of the Chilean crisis of 30 yeas ago. The documentary will soon be released in Brazil in DVD by Videofilme.
