Marie Nyreröd tells how she shot Ingmar Bergman

When Ingmar Bergman heard that Marie Nyreröd was coming to São Paulo to exhibit the documentary: Ingmar Bergman Completo: Bergman e o Cinema, Bergman e o Teatro, Bergman e a Ilha de Farö: he said: “I’ve got good memories from São Paulo. It was the first city in the world to recognize my work.”

Marie says it took her five years to convince the celebrated Swedish filmmaker to participate in the documentary, which represents the most complete exhibition of his life and his ideas, and it was nominated to an Emmy award. In the film, Bergman talks not only about the cinema and the theater. “He talks about life, death, love, the children, God and everything else”, says the filmmaker.

She met Bergman in 1983, when she was working as journalist for the Swedish TV. In 1997, she made a longest interview and developed he documentary’s project. Marie spent five years researching the director’s interviews, and watched over all his films. She had to ask him to make the film three times, proving once again the famous filmmaker resistance to interviews and journalists. “On the first time, he said “no”. On the second time, “maybe”. On the third time, he accepted, saying: “I see you’re not afraid of me”, reveals Marie.

In a good mood, Marie defines herself as “a journalist who pretends to be a filmmaker”. And says that when she shoots, above all her interest is “the human being and the eternal questions: why are we here, what’s life, what’s love, what’s death”. About the motion picture’s future, she’s optimist: “We’ll still have as many shorter films as longer films, to serve all meanings, those you’ll be able to shoot with your cell phone and those of 5 hours length that you’ll see in the movies theaters. The motion picture shall take all the directions”.

The film will be exhibited next Monday (24th), 6:00 pm, at Espaço Unibanco, next Tuesday (25th), 3:30 pm, at Arteplex 2, and on Saturday (29th), 8:20 pm, at Cineclube Vitrine 2.
