Venice 2005 - Pay-tv promises 24-hour coverage

Two pay-TV networks are promising special 24-hour coverage of the 62nd Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica di Venezia (August 31 through September 11, 2005). The Venice Film Festival is ensured 24-hour coverage by the official sponsor of the Festival, Rai Sat, and special coverage, with thematic sessions at three different times, by competitor Sky.

Whereas the official coverage runs the risk of being deemed "officialesque" - devoid of opinion - with a record only of the collective press with the directors in competition, and the opening and closing ceremonies with the announcement of the winners, Sky is announcing a theme package that distinguishes between author film making and reverence for the heroes of the popular films in Italian cinema of the past.

The Sky authoral package will focus on Spike Lee in his non-conformity with the U.S. with a retrospective of his films and presentation of his as yet unseen Sucker Free City, described as "an adrenaline pilot from a TV series". Sky Classic Cinema will pay tribute to Italian Fulvio Luciano, to the masters of Italian B ranking films of the seventies and eighties, and interviews with celebrities such as Quentin Tarantino, one of the staunch defenders of B films and who, as from the 2004 Venice Film Festival has been salvaging authors that were forgotten and are now considered 'craftsmen' and 'cult', such as Maria Bava, Di Leo, Cottafavi, and Freda. As always, popular cinema from the past, ignored and looked down on with disdain by the elite of the time, are seen as "cult' by the new generations.
