The 62nd Venice Film Festival will be held August 31 through September 10, with a selection for 2005 that includes 56 films from 20 countries. Meirelles is competing with The Constant Gardener, a co-production between the UK, Germany, and Kenya, filmed in Africa, with Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz. Outstanding among the films in competition are Brokeback Mountain, by Ang Lee; Magic Mirror, by Portuguese Manoel de Oliveira, and Mary, by Abel Ferrara with Juliette Binoche in the leading role.In addition, two renowned actors are presenting films as directors: George Clooney, with Goodnight and Good Luck, and John Turturro, with Romance and Cigarettes.

Singer Franco Battiato is presenting his second film, Musikanten. In 2003, he directed Perduto Amor.

There are two films from Spain, that will be shown outside the official competition: Fragile, by director Jaume Balagueró and Isabel Coixet's latest film, La Vida Secreta de las Palabras that are to open the Horizons alternative session.
