Manoel de Oliveira is working on a sequel to Belle de Jour

With the vim and vigor of all of his 96 years, Portuguese film maker Manoel de Oliveira has just completed his newest feature, Magic Mirror, with a world premiere programmed for September at the Venice Festival (Please read on). Even before the film has been released, Oliveira is busy with his new project: a sequel to the classic Belle de Jour (1967) by Luis Buñuel.

The film is to be entitled Belle Toujours - according to the film maker in Barcelona - and will broach the subject of lasting beauty and desire. Oliveira actually went as far as to invite famous film star Catherine Deneuve to again play the role of Severine; however, she did not accept. Actress Juliette Binoche, also French, will play the role in lieu of Catherine Deneuve.

Belle de Jour, shown at the 24th Mostra in a retrospective of films by Buñuel, is regarded as a classic in cinematographic eroticism. The film tells the story of a high society woman who cannot experience intimacy with her husband, even though she loves him, whereupon she fulfills her libido away from home living out erotic fantasies as a prostitute.

Belle Toujours is at the pre-production stage and is to be filmed in France next year.
