The 28th São Paulo International Film Festival ends with a special award to Manoel de Oliveira

The closing night of the 20th São Paulo International Film Festival began with the award ceremony. This year there was a novelty prize: the “Humanity” Awards, specially created for Manoel de Oliveira. The 95-year-old Portuguese filmmaker was an honorable guest at this years edition. He introduced his most recent film “The Fifth Empire – Yesterday as Today”, a political and poetical narrative about the life of King D. Sebastião.

The Iranian filmmaker Bahman Gohbadi was once again unanimous with the public and jury of the Festival. This year the public chose “Turtles Can Fly”, his latest feature, as the best foreign fiction film. The jury of the 24th edition voted on his first film “A Time For Drunken Horses” (which was on a tie with “April Captains” by Maria de Medeiros, and Stephen Daldry’s “Billy Elliot”). On the 26th edition the jury also rewarded his “Marooned in Iraq”, Gohbadi’s second feature film.

The public’s other favorites where “Feminices” by Domingos de Oliveira (best Brazilian fiction film), “Fabuloso Fábio” by Pedro Cezar, Ricardo Bocão and Antônio Costa (best Brazilian documentary) and “Memórias del Saqueo” by the Argentinean Fernando Solandas (best foreign documentary).

The Jury, formed by Cacá Diegues, Fridrik Thor Fridriksson, Abolfazl Jalili, George Sluizer, Elisa Resegotti e Philippe Maynial – elected the American/ Columbian production “Maria Full of Grace” by Joshua Marston as best fiction film. Honorable mentions went to “In Your Hands” by Annette Olesen and “Turtles Can Fly” by Bahman Gohbadi. The best Brazilian documentary was “Estamira” by Marcos Prado.

The critics elected the Thai film “Tropical Malady” by Apichatpong Weerasethakul as their favorite, with honorable mentions to the Argentinian/ Spanish production “La Niña Santa” by Lucrecia Martel.

The evening was concluded with a beautiful performance by the British singer Jane Birkin.
